Cool-Gard™ II

Cool-Gard II is a fully formulated summer coolant, winter antifreeze that delivers unsurpassed protection from corrosion, cavitation, foaming, rust and scaling. Cool-Gard II is designed to withstand thermal oxidation and breakdown to handle higher temperature applications while providing 6 years or 6,000* hours of service.

John Deere Cool-Gard II is available in two forms – concentrate, which must be mixed with water for proper freeze protection, and pre-mix which is a ready-to-use formula containing 50/50 mix of fully formulated John Deere Cool-Gard II concentrate and demineralized water. This long-life coolant, which was specially developed for heavy-duty diesel engines, can also be used in all gas engines, including those with aluminum blocks.

Cool-Gard™ II Concentrate

Cool-Gard II concentrate requires the addition of quality water to attain the desired concentration and freeze protection level. It is highly recommended that low-mineral or distilled water be used to dilute the coolant. Using impure water can reduce the performance and life of the coolant. See mixing ratios charts below.

The addition of coolant conditioner or supplemental coolant additive is not required. This is a fully formulated product.

Cool-Gard™ II Test Strips

The possibility exists for cooling systems to be diluted or contaminated, and we encourage testing with Cool-Gard II Test Strips at annual intervals.

Use Cool-Gard II Test Strips to test Cool-Gard II for freeze point, pH, and cavitation/corrosion inhibiter level.

The strips come packaged 10 per bottle, which has the “use by” date code printed on the cap.  Strips are expected to be accurate for a period of 14 months after date of manufacturing.  Be aware to rotate your inventory and only purchase what you think will be used within a few months.

Instructions for use are provided on a pocket sized folded sheet as well as an abbreviated version on the bottle. A long version of these instructions can be printed by clicking on this link:

Cool-Gard™ II Extender

Cool-Gard II Extender is the only treatment that should be used with Cool-Gard II. Use Cool-Gard II Extender to replenish the level of protective additives in Cool-Gard II systems only if the Test Strips indicate the need.

Bittering Agent – Safety Additive

We have elected to add a bittering agent to all package sizes containing ethylene glycol to render the coolant or antifreeze unpalatable and to discourage accidental ingestion of this product. This includes Cool-Gard II pre-mix and concentrate forms.

It is now added as a safety additive to a wide range of automotive, household, pesticide, and garden products. The bitter taste is a natural warning to discourage swallowing. It is static and odorless, but only tiny amounts are needed to make products taste unpalatable.

Cool-Gard™ II Frequently Asked Questions

Cool-Gard II Heavy-Duty Summer Coolant/Winter Antifreeze with 6 year/6,000 hour service life has been introduced to dealers and customers as of December 2008. These are additional questions and answers to support your understanding of the event.

Why are we launching Cool-Gard II?

New product development is part of our commitment to serving the customer. Market demands supporting our decision to launch at this time include:

Ř  Engine technology advancements

Ř  Higher operating temperatures due to exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)

Ř  Compact cooler designs due to equipment space limitations

Ř  Alternate component construction/metallurgy

Ř  Extended service intervals from customer demand for economy

Ř  Global market/environmental constraints and requests for Nitrite free preferences

Is Cool-Gard™ II compatible with other brands and types of coolant in the market place?

Yes, Cool-Gard II is compatible with other coolants in the marketplace. Although we do not recommend mixing of other coolants with Cool-Gard II, as part of our due diligence, we have performed compatibility testing against other heavy duty diesel coolants representing a spectrum of formulation strategies, including Caterpillar ELC, Detroit Diesel PowerCool and PowerCool Plus, and Cummins ES Complete and Cummins Optimax. Using standardized ASTM test procedures, Cool-Gard II was mixed at 3:1, 1:1, & 1:3 ratios and subjected to ASTM 1384 and ASTM 4340 test procedures. All of these mixtures did pass these two corrosion tests.

Is Cool-Gard II compatible with automotive coolant?

Yes, with this cautionary note; we are compatible from a product perspective, but it must be noted that we do not recommend using any automotive coolant in a diesel or heavy duty application. The main reason for this is that most automotive coolants are not designed to provide liner cavitation performance, and as such, mixing of Cool-Gard or Cool-Gard II with automotive coolant will dilute the ability of our coolants to provide adequate liner cavitation protection. Mixing of Cool-Gard or Cool-Gard II with automotive coolant is not recommended.

Is Cool-Gard II compatible with glycerin products?

It is too early to tell as there is very little to no glycerin based coolant in the North American engine coolant market. There are additional questions of mixing different base fluids, i.e. ethylene glycol, and glycerin due to lack of standardization or history of product (glycerin) use. Compatibility with the Cummins glycerin based coolant is planned and the results will be added to our coolant compatibility database.

Are there any changes to cautionary statements regarding consumption by animals?

Cool-Gard II is made with an ethylene glycol (EG) base and the toxicity level of EG. Although not required in all areas, we add the bittering agent to all Cool-Gard II packages. The bitter taste helps to prevent accidental ingestion of this product.  Packaging labels will continue to contain a warning to keep out of reach of children and animals.

What is the environmental impact of a spill?

Precaution should be taken to prevent spilling of coolant containing ethylene glycol. Do not reuse empty containers and dispose of them in accordance with governmental regulations. For 24-hour emergency assistance, call John Deere: 800-822-8262.

Can Cool-Gard II be recycled?

Yes. Cool-Gard II should be recycled just like any other antifreeze / engine coolant and it is not restricted.

What will happen if coolant gets into the engine oil crankcase?

The adverse effects of ethylene glycol-based coolant are universal to the oil in an engine crankcase.  Ethylene glycol (or almost any other glycol, for that matter) will disrupt the lubrication properties of the oil. Any amount of coolant that gets into the crankcase is detrimental.  If the glycol / water mix displaces the oil in the bearings, lubrication and load carrying ability is lost, and severe wear is going to rapidly occur.

Can I mix Cool-Gard II EG and Cool-Gard II PG?

No. Cool-Gard II PG is a non-toxic fluid.  Combining the Cool-Gard II EG and Cool-Gard II PG would eliminate the non-toxic benefits of Cool-Gard II PG. Before filling with Cool-Gard II PG, a through flush is required to eliminate all previous coolant.
