GL-5 Gear Lubricants

GL-5 is the preferred oil in John Deere compartments when gear oils are recommended. API GL-5 is for service similar to GL-4, but for more severe conditions. It applies to conditions encountered in hypoid gears. Other equipment operated under high-speed, shock-load; high-speed, low-torque; and low-speed, high-torque conditions may specify API GL-5.

Features and benefits

·         Designed for gears, particularly hypoid which operate under conditions of high-speed, low-torque and low-speed, high-torque

·         Meets API GL-5 / MT1, JDM J11G, SAEJ2360, MACK GO-J, Eaton Roadranger E500 / SHANES-256, Navistar Int’L TMS-6816, Arvinmeritor 0-76N, and service designation MIL-L-2105E

Applications

Can be used in any application requiring API, GL-5; SAE 80, 90, 80W-90, or 85W-140 gear lubricants.

Mixing gear lubricants

As a general practice, the mixing of lubricants should be avoided.

Mixing gear lubricants with even small amounts of other types of lubricants can result in antagonistic reactions between the additive chemicals in the mixture. Such reactions may result in a significant loss of gear protection.

Always follow your equipment manufacturers’ recommendations for gear lubricants.

John Deere GL-5 LS Gear Lubricants with Limited Slip Additive

The following lubricants are recommended for wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks with ZF differentials requiring TE-ML-05C gear lubricant. These products can be used in axles for the 844J, 250C, 250D, 300C, 300D, 350C, 350D, 400C, and 400D.

ZF approval numbers:

·         TY26204 (ZF000049)

·         TY26205 (ZF000049)

·         TY25050 (ZF000051)

These products are specifically designed for axles with wet multi-disk limited-slip differentials or wet multi-disk brakes and gears, particularly hypoid, which operate under extreme conditions.

Limited slip axle lubricant additive

Adding top treatment additives can change the oil performance in an unpredictable manner due to sensitivity with mixing and the treatment rate. It is recommended to use the John Deere GL-5 gear lubricant with a limited slip additive in the above applications, but when the customer uses a mineral based J11E or API GL-5 gear lubricant, John Deere has adopted a limited slip axle lubricant additive top treatment. Follow directions on the bottle and do not over treat. A 1-quart container will treat 5 gallons of mineral based J11E or API GL-5.
