Technology, solutions, value

A growing number of users have discovered when applying highly corrosive chemicals, such as defoliants, complications arise with the nozzle caps and assemblies. Most complications occur when the defoliant chemical reacts with heat or sunlight causing nozzle caps and assemblies to crack and eventually deteriorate. With this in mind, John Deere has provided recommendations on how to deal with this issue. Listed below are three steps to follow when spraying highly corrosive chemicals, like defoliants.

Step one: Proper part selection

Use of the TwinCap systems improves defoliation effectiveness

The spray delivered by two nozzles, angled at 30 degrees forward and rearward, improves canopy penetration; therefore, John Deere has developed a TwinCap design made with raw materials (Polyvinylidene Flouride – PVDF) that are highly tolerant to acidic defoliants. When using this PSTCCR TwinCap to apply defoliants, it is recommended to utilize chemical-resistant tips and pumps along with proper cleaning products. Chemical-resistant tips, stainless steel pumps and cleaning product information are noted below.

Step two: Cleanliness

John Deere cleaning products provide maximum cleaning protection against cracking and deterioration

Poor cleaning procedure, in most cases, is the root cause to durability issues with nozzle cap and assemblies when applying defoliants. Make sure to follow the chemical label directions when conducting product clean-out.

It is critical to thoroughly clean all defoliant chemical residues from the external and internal sprayer systems (specifically solution and boom systems). With the cleaning process in mind, John Deere provides a line of On-board pressure washers designed exclusively for John Deere self-propelled sprayers. These power pressure washers provide great cleaning capabilities to assist in cleaning your sprayer wherever you go! Also, to aid in the solution system cleaning process, John Deere recommends the use of their Tank Cleaner, specially formulated to neutralize and remove chemical residues from solution systems.

By utilizing the proper cleaning procedures and products, nozzle caps and assemblies have a much greater chance to combat cracking and deterioration. Proper cleaning techniques will also help keep your John Deere self-propelled sprayer looking like new!

Step three: Chemical product knowledge

Proper chemical product knowledge is important

With chemical compositions and application methods changing periodically, it is important to have complete understanding of the chemical being applied and current recommendations for each. If there are questions about application rates and other chemical label information, access the Greenbook website at http://www.greenbook.net/.

These three steps, when properly utilized, will help ensure that your John Deere spray nozzles and assemblies will stay durable and effective for many more spraying seasons to come.
