Gauge Wheels are Critical to Seed Trench Formation 

The gauge wheel and the planter opener blades work together to form a well-defined seed furrow for consistent depth. The design of the gauge wheel tire creates a clearly distinct seed furrow by firming the soil on either side of the seed trench. The tire’s lip helps create this firming action and minimizes soil build-up between the wheel and the blade. The semi-pneumatic rubber tire flexes to help shed soil and ensures a consistent depth. 

Gauge wheels and gauge wheel tires are offered in three basic formats: 

Standard Width:  4.5” width gauge wheels found on most planters, grain drills and no-till air seeding tools. 

Narrow Width:  3” width gauge wheels found on some planters and seeding tools, usually to help facilitate narrow row configurations. 

Conservation:  Specialized gauge wheel with reduced inner profile (RIP) to aid in reducing sidewall compaction in heavy, wet, no-till conditions.  RIP wheels are not recommended in sandy or conventionally tilled soils.

Gauge Wheel Tires

The tire is the primary wear point of the gauge wheel.  John Deere and A&I now offer growers more choice in gauge wheel tires, including the newly introduced heavy duty premium option. 

The premium, heavy duty gauge wheel tire contains thicker material - more than 40% in the semi-pneumatic region and almost 80% in the lip area.  Internal tests show little to no signs of wear or damage after three years of operation in corner conditions.

Gauge Wheel Bearings

The bearing is another key component of gauge wheel performance.  John Deere now offers a tiered portfolio of gauge wheel bearings.  These bearings also fit most closing wheels.

AA97285- Heavy Duty Bearing

• Added protection against dirt and debris ingression to the bearing, providing longer life  

• Better sealing with a labyrinth type design instead of a lip seal

Gauge Wheel Assemblies 

While some customers prefer to repair gauge wheels by replacing the bearing and/or the tire, many others prefer a full replacement of the gauge wheel.  As such, John Deere offers several options, to cover the variety of gauge wheel widths and formats and upgrade opportunities.  One recent trend has been “spoked” gauge wheels. 

Spoked Gauge Wheels 

Spoked gauge wheels address the problem of mud build up between the gauge wheel and the opener blade, causing the disk to seize and drag through the soil, negatively affecting seed trench quality, and ultimately yield.  They are also more serviceable, since changing the bearing can be accomplished without taking the gauge wheel apart.  Simply remove the snap ring, replace the bearing, and re-install the snap ring.
